Mi·chu·rin \mi-ˈchür-in\ , Ivan Vladimirovich (1855–1935), Russian horticulturist and geneticist. In his time Michurin was highly regarded by the Soviet government for his work in the crossbreeding of plants. He developed better strains and new varieties of fruits, vegetables, and grains. His theories of hybridization required acceptance of the inheritance of acquired characteristics and were widely promulgated in Soviet science.
